Town Centre Faces Massive Change8.58.25pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 1st Oct 2006 Liberal Democrats welcome opportunity for major improvement in Town as Sainsbury's supermarket planned Local Lib Dems have welcomed the progress being made by Tynedale District Council on their plans to get development of land behind Front St to build a major new multi million pound shopping centre. After years of inertia when a previous developer who had exclusive rights to look for potential schemes, a new developer has been granted the rights and is hoping to bring an exciting new scheme forward soon. Now MODUS have revealed that supermarket chain Sainsbury's are likely to be the anchor store in the plans for a shopping centre and town square, with space for lots new shops. "We welcome the appointment of consultants MODUS and hope that it will lead to rapid progress on getting Prudhoe the major league shops it deserves. We have been starved of investment in the town for too long and local Liberal Democrat councillors will be doing all we can to help the developers in moving schemes forward." said councillor Gerry Caldwell pictured at the proposed "opportunity site" which would lead off front street onto the land currently occupied by the British legion and the old co-op creamery and allotments behind it. "Clearly this is a major opportunity but it must be done right. We will be trying to ensure that the development is high quality and works well with existing roads and that disruption could be minimised for existing traders and residents." commented Councillor Neil Bradbury, also pictured above. It is hoped that MODUS will begin consultation on the plans with the public soon.
